Eh! How you bin?!

Many factors leading to a one week absence from the ol' blog, most notably the most disgusting flu I've had in years where I pretty much wanted to sleep every day at work under my desk. But alas I had enough energy to wake up at 4am Saturday morning, get on the bus and trek 8hrs to the buckeye state to see the Reds against the Yellows. It all went a lil' something like this ... mmmyesss ....

BMO at 5am

Beer at 5am

There was no urinating on this church, but many jokes made about doing it

Ahhh Buffal ... I mean Columbus!

This guy was crazy

Almost 2,000 literate Canadians on hand

A game broke out!

A riot broke out! (not really)

Goooooool TFC and then it went bananas again.

In Carver we trust ... we steal a point! Can't be beat 2009!

This is where it began *sigh* GO THUGS

I need a drink after that.

8hrs later the next day, home sweet home.

ON TO TAKING ON SEATTLE! 6 DAYS TO GO!!

Holy First Kick!

Whoa damn. This is no expansion team. Or wait, what's the question? Is Seattle this good or NYRB that bad? Well, I'd be willing to toss out there that NYRB could be that bad. Sure they made it to the MLS Cup finals, but they hardly edged us out into the playoffs and I haven't followed their offseason but I can't see any big signings except the loss of Dave Van De Bergh. And on a little siderant wtf I thought this game started at 10pm?? I go onto justin.tv and the game is 30 mins in! ESPN commentating is the WORST. I'm curious to see how this crowd holds up, if it's first game celebrations or if this really is a football crowd.

March 21 is here and October feels just like yesterday when we were whooping it up after beating Chicago. Alot of promise for 2009, I'm just hoping we still pick up another CB (really!?!) because the Harmse/Velez/Serioux trio is gonna be bananas with cards and suspensions. This season though my man to watch is Guevara. If he's anything like 2005 and like he's been with Honduras, we are gonna be beasts. Tomorrow night will be sweet, except I'm sick as a dog now and are getting tattooed tomorrow, so I could very well be barfing everywhere by game time. That's right. Picture it. Spark puking. BARF! My prediction via rolling dice:

TFC 1
KC ... 6!!!!

WTF forget that. No dice, just gut. TFC 2 - KC 1. We have the offence, KC has too many injuries off the top, we can do it! Start the season on the road right. Then off to Columbus next weekend which will also be bananas. THEN it's BMO TIME! This is our challenge this season to show up these guys, which I don't think will be hard. I"m looking forward to Serioux hopefully being fit for the home opener and ripping into Montero. I think we can count on it.

The last man on earth

... to get his TFC season tickets! Man. What an ordeal. I had this blog all ready to go Monday. I am sure there must be one other person who deals with courier companies being moronic as often as I do. Basically the story goes as follows:

Wake up Monday morning. Yeeeaaaawn. Man, this daylight savings is still killing me! Go to work. Troll around the internet. See that people are getting their tickets today. HOORAY! Mine must be at home. Get home. See this:

And this.

Now a quick sidenote. Why oh why when you deal with something courier related can't you say WHERE it needs to be couriered. EBAY, online purchases etc ... I am fortunate to still be employed so I'm not home from 9-5 to pick up packages. Anyway, why is it that the note on the door is NEVER the post office or courier depot closest to you? To top it off I work in North York so to get down to the Queensway before this place closes, c'est impossible! See figure 1.

Finally after phone calls and a redirection that was redirected to the wrong postnet, today was the big day. Nice sunny walk down to the postnet to get my tickets!

The first thing out of the guys mouth: You're the TFC guy? (i'd been in there the day before) YES I AM! Then he offered to buy my extra games off me! SORRY MATE I'LL BE AT ALL EIGHTEEN.

Zipped back to work to celebrate christmas on March 18!!

EAST SIDE STAND UP!

Oh when the reds

Oh so close. What can you say? It's been a great pre-season and lots to look forward to this year. Namely De Rosario. It would have been nice to lift our first trophy today, but I'll take the Canadian Championship, Trillium or MLS Cup later this year instead. Still hoping for a defender - man red cards wtf? This is going to spell trouble because it's obvious we have 3 hot heads on the back line right now. So I guess the boys are back here for a bit then off to K.C. and then to Columbus before April 4! THAT is the big day and I am stoked for non-stop TFC this summer. So even though we lose today, what we've seen so far this pre-season has been super positive.

On a Reds related note. It was great to wear this shirt around allllll day long.

2014. Plan in effect.

Jeez man has it been a week? Not like there hasn't been anything going on. TFC is deep into it and ready for RSL in the Carolina Cup. Good to see that TFC picked up the streams of those matches, and finally get a glimpse of Serioux, De Rosario & Co. Even with all things MLS quickly approaching, we can't forget about our national program.

It's good to see the women still going strong and finishing high in Cyprus. The move to bring in Carolina Morace looks good thus far. May 25th - BMO Field against Japan we can all see this first hand. But per usual the focus here is going to be our stellar men's program!

It's been a while since our boy De Guzman unleashed his vocal rant about the CSA and their epic failures. It's also been super quiet on the CMNT front, which is not good. The one thing we don't need from this program is inactivity. I haven't forgotten the inspiring document titled "Wellness to the World Cup - 2014". 2009 is really starting to shape up. It looks like De Guzman was right to lament, and people's skepticism (ok well mine for sure) afterwards of the CSA's comments assuring us everything is coming together (possible other matches). Our friendly against the mighty Cyprus is the ONLY pre-gold cup friendly scheduled. Why you might ask? BUDGET RESTRAINTS. Amazing. I can't help but compare with the other clubs in CONCACAF, specifically the U.S., who have already played Sweden and are in the Confederations Cup with Brazil, Italy and Egypt. Wow. I wonder, did we get a 2 for 1 or something because of the Cyprus Cup? "Hey come here for a women's tourney and we'll throw in a friendly against the men's FIFA #98!"

Actually I shouldn't be making fun, although the CSA website sees fit to make front page news of how we "are holding 8th spot in CONCACAF" (among 10 teams), Canada has dropped down to 94 in the world rankings. I wonder if the CSA will continue to pretend as though nobody notices these failures, will De Guzman continue to speak out (I hope so) and who is going to play for this team in the Gold Cup this summer? I cannot imagine our best players will be motivated to perform in an international tournament with virtually no real game preparation and with the same coach who lead them to pretty much absolute last place in World Cup Qualifying not even one year ago.

2009 hold so much promise for TFC, it's already been above and beyond for Montreal, Vancouver could be awarded a team in MLS and the women seem to have made good moves. Yet here we are (ok here I am) in March with nothing on the Men's team other than slipping in the world rankings and a friendly against a tiny island nation. I guess this is a strategic move on behalf of the CSA to get us some wins because as recent history has shown, tiny island nations are our best chances at victory these days!!

From Hogtown to Chucktown

Well the boys are outta town just in time to avoid another beautiful Saturday here in Toronto. Everything seems to be lining up nicely for March 21 and there are good reasons to be optimistic. Are we still trying to bring in Phillippe Christanval? Another CB has got to be ... well, not a priority, but certainly would be a good idea to secure us what would become a very solid line-up back to front.

I'm looking around and can't seem to find any info on any of these Carolina Cup games being televised. Last year it was pretty sweet to at least be able to stream them on CBC. I'll look around tonight to see if it's on justin tv or something like that but it would be great to see the likes of Vitti, Cronin, Serioux etc ... before the Kansas City game.

So hangin in, waiting for that package in the mail, and still in shock from Thursday night. I felt like I was watching Meldrick Taylor against Chavez where I was left in complete disbelief. What was Nigel Reid's comment after Montreal went up 2-1? Game, set, match? Oh man ...

This was England

Growing up the one thing my parents tried their hardest to curb from my habits was an insatiable appetite for television. Hey, most of us are kids from the 70s or 80s and maybe 90s. TV is our friend. It keeps us warm, looks after us and feeds us with knowledge. Or garbage. Depends on what channel you watch. As a kid I'd watch anything out there but now that I'm all grown up (look at me mom!) and have priorities and responsibilities (yuk) I have to be more selective. So obviously football is up there, home reno shows and to be honest I LOVE food TV. My love for watching food but being unable to cook it myself (hmmm kinda like watching football but can't kick a ball for shit) led me to a great book called Heat. Heat is written by Bill Buford and is about working in Mario Batali's kitchen in NYC. A fantastic book about cooking in one of the best restaurants in America and Buford's journey to gain REAL Italian cooking skills. Once I finished this book, about a year ago, my roommate posed the question to me, "Have you read his book on hooliganism?" ... WTF? "Uh, no, this is the same guy? ... Football hooliganism?" Well it sure was. Now that I'm rotating between a football book every other read, it was time to cover the topic of English hooliganism from what is regarded as one of the best.

I've always been interested in reading about English hooliganism from the 80s since I read How Soccer Explains the World with Foer interviewing an original Chelsea Headhunter. It's not about glorifying violence or "watching the trainwreck", I like to know anything historical, and terraces and hooliganism was a major part of the game in England during this decade. This book was recommended to me and the topic I found intreaguing so it seemed like a good start.

For someone from North America, Canada specifically, your journey reading this book almost mirrors Buford's nearly ten years in England following the game and it's fans. I have no frame of reference for sports violence, at least not on this scale. I really can't think of any sport over here that has been the catalyst for such absurd violence before, during or after the game. Buford, like myself, starts out a curious spectator eager to get in and meet a real hooligan, and find out what this is all about. He gets in with Man United supporters in the early 1980s, talking to a few, then following them to Turin for a Cup Winners Cup match against Juventus. This is his, and the reader's first taste of what this is really all about - not just getting wasted, falling down drunk and a few ugly scuffles - but finally witnessing the meaning of finally "it's going to go off".

One of my favorite passages/chapters in the book is brilliant a conversation he has with a superintendent of the police in Sunderland about violence at sporting matches, specifically in North America, which possibly puts in perspective why things were the way they were:

"Am I mistaken, Mr Buford," he asked, 'or is it the case, that there is seating for everyone at every American football match?" He had heard this was so.

Buford confirms and then confirms that although there are 60 minutes of play, games last for sometimes up to 3hrs.

"And am I mistaken, Mr Buford,' he continued, 'or is it the case that, even though the matches might last two or even three hours there is no crowd trouble?'

Buford assures him it is a very rare thing. He shakes his head, uncomprehending.

For over five years, almost ten, Buford attends numerous games in England and abroad, domestic games and international, chronicling the idea of "the crowd" and it's role in violence in football. He sees racism - from regular folks to all out 'nationalists' and violence from total trash to guys pocketing rolls of fifties. I was going to go really into this book and the details but have found that the trip over 300 pages is similar to Buford's through 8+ years - by the end you so are sick of it and totally over how f@%*ing stupid crowd violence and hooliganism is. You really just sit back and think, holy shit what a bunch of losers, and the truth is you become what you surround yourself with.

Buford ends his saga with one last hurrah at the 1990 World Cup in Italy to see if "it goes off" one last time. It does but it seems like although already knowing it, he needs to be in it one last time to reach his epiphany. A fellow journalist approaches him after a massive march with the police and proclaims how stupid the whole thing was - "I have never seen something so stupid in all my life." Buford looks at him and states that he liked him very much - "No, nor have I".

Among the Thugs is worth going through the journey, for nothing more than seeing a side of the game that is so pointless and worthless that better to get it out and over with in a book then wanting to experience it in real life. The real kicker is when Buford receives a message from one of the serious hooligans from Man U who has "retired" and is living Barbados:

Sunbathing, good food and great sex is so much better than being a thug.

And the award goes to ...

Hey I already used this title! Damn. Zero points for originality. But this time it's the most important one yet. That's right the amazing last place trophy (AKA BUTT TROPHY) goes to our main man, Don Garber. Donnie had an amazing week pushing MLS above and beyond top notch credibility not only here in North America but all over the world. First, as mentioned earlier, looks like Beckham will be returning for ... 13 games? WTF. Then, Barcelona has withdrawn their bid for a franchise. And to top it all off, shunned, spurned, unable to meet the requirements (you know, average 10,000 fans a game and play on a football/baseball field) Montreal draws over 50,000 for their Champions League game. I don't really know what to say about all this ... oh wait yes I do.

Let's not get too deep into the whole Beckham thing. I could devote an entire blog to this crap. Regardless MLS looks like complete fools in this situation. I am pretty sure the only reason why MLS wants him back is because of obligations they must have made with sponsors/investors. This whole thing is such a bust - they created a salary cap rule for this guy! That has screwed every team that has tried to use it! The one thing I'm most pissed about is he's finishing the season at AC Milan, and gets 6 weeks off, thus missing the Toronto game. Dammit. Then he will play a total of 13 games? What is the point??? I guess I can see it. So he has to pay out his contract, which, now that I think of it, will be way more then they'd ever get from AC Milan for his transfer.

Now we have the Miami/Barcelona bid dropping out - possibly because of our man Beckham! That's right, the valuation of entrance into MLS ($40 million) must factor in David Beckham. I mean, look at the attendance averages over the last two years - they are respectable but if you take out the games Beckham played they are significantly lower. So Barcelona (and Montreal) aren't morons and can see that this price is waaaay too high. Not to mention, this bizzaro little tidbit that MLS is sponsored by Adidas and Barca is 100% NIKE! BAAAARRRRFFFFF. Yes looks like Galeano is not far off when lamenting how the game is now all about brands and not about nations, teams, players, etc ...

And last but not least we have the city I love ... ok fine ... the city whose women I love. No for real I love Montréal. The team that "could not meet the requirements" draws over 50,000 for a match where if all goes well, will get another huge home game in the near future. When you break it down and look at it seriously, $40 million is so ridiculous and for the marketability and credibility of the league it's really unfortunate that concessions could not be made for a city and franchise that clearly has strong local support. Unfortunately Don Garber reminds me of Gary Bettman. If a team ponies up the cash, fuck, we could have a team in North Dakota! With dollar signs in his eyes, let's bend MLS over and take it from Beckham, or Barcelona who wanted to put a team in one of the worst sports markets in the United States.

Wow that was some rant. I was supposed to write a book review tonight! But I couldn't help myself. These three things are all too glaring to ignore. Make no mistake I love TFC and MLS but hey, I love hockey too but it's clear Bettman is a Grade A douchebag, and has fucked the NHL over so bad with idiotic cash grabbing franchises that it's backfiring in the worst way now.

Eff Beckham, and let's bring in players who aren't here to retire, eff Barcelona and bring in franchises that have devoted fans not one owner with $40 million.
